The winter storms have brought to our beaches a bounty of plastic pieces.

Thankfully I have my Tiger Bag!  The handy mesh bottom lets sand fall through and keeps the plastic pieces inside.

Great ways to reduce your plastic usage!

Ways to Reduce your Usage:

1. Take your own reusable bags to all stores, not just the grocery store.

2. Do not use plastic produce bags. Larger items like apples and tomatoes don't need a bag. Just cluster them together at checkout. For items like chili peppers or okra, bring your own reusable produce bags.

3. When purchasing items like celery and carrots, choose those without plastic packaging.

4. Buy toilet tissue that does not include inner plastic packaging.

5. Buy sliced cheese that does not have individually wrapped slices.

6. Instead of covering your bowl of leftovers with plastic film before microwaving, cover it with a plate.

7. Stop buying plastic zipper bags. You'll be surprised how easy it is to find reusable substitutes.

8. Shop the bulk food section for items like pasta and beans. Bring your own light-weight reusable bags, and then transfer the food into airtight containers at home.

9. When buying any product, choose no packaging if possible, but then choose paper over plastic.

10. Stop buying beverages packaged in plastic bottles. Opt for aluminum, which is much more efficiently recycled.

11. Stop buying bottled water altogether. Instead, filter your own water and carry it in reusable BPA-free water bottles.

12. Refuse plastic bags at your dry cleaners, and instead, take a garment bag with you for your cleaned clothes.

13. Use reusable storage containers instead of plastic wrap for leftovers.

14. Use wax paper instead of plastic wrap for lunches.

15. And finally, when you do end up with a plastic bag, plastic bubble wrap or anything else plastic that's meant for a single use, reuse it anyway - and then recycle it properly.

Cherri send me this article about reducing the amount of single use plastic we all use. I particularly like #12. I don't use dry cleaning services much, but I will bring my own garment bag from now on! Thanks Cherri--Teresa

From old to new + thrilled little boy…

I had an old sewing basket, box, tote, whatever that I never used anymore. I had it in the giveaway pile when a thought struck me, "Why not recover it?" Little Man likes to hand stitch and both of his sisters have sewing boxes, but all the ones in stores look really girly…

Sewing Box Redo Tutorial

Before…

We picked out this fun fabric thinking it would go nicely with the existing navy blue trim…

First, take off the velcro closure on the front of the box. I used a seem ripper…

Then, measure the top and cut the fabric about 1cm bigger width and length wise than the top. The top was padded so I had to push the ruler down to get an accurate measurement…

Next apply a generous layer of Modge Podge (I used glossy) to the entire top of the box…

Lay the fabric flat on the Modge Podge, smooth out any wrinkles and apply ANOTHER layer of Modge Podge on TOP of the fabric (It doesn't matter if you get Modge Podge on the trim of your box, it blends in once dry)…

Then take a pointy object (I used a tweezers) and tuck the fabric into the cracks all the way around the top…

Measure and cut another length of fabric to go around the side and back, repeat the tucking with the tweezers…

Let it dry overnight…

Sew a piece of felt to fit over the closure tab, remembering to sew the velcro on first, then use a generous bit of Modge Podge to stick the other side of the velcro closure to the box, let dry again over night…

And you are done and your little boy is very happy to fill it with many treasures!

making my head spin. I can't believe that 2011 is already gone. December and January are crazy months around here. Big Girls birthday is in Dec, then Christmas and New Year's and then Little Girl's birthday. Whew. And, she turned 10, yes 10, not so little of a girl anymore. She was 6 when Green Bag Lady began.

Have you heard of bkr bottles yet? Don't they look yummy enough to eat? Pronounced beaker, they are reusable glass water bottles wrapped in a lovely silicone sleeve. Girl Scouting Goes Green

Were you a Girl Scout? I was and my mom was my troop leader through it all. I gave up in High School but my younger sister didn't, she even got her Gold Award. For those of you that don't know what that is, it is similar to the Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouting. I am now a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and Little Girl loves her troop. Big Girl adores going to camp every year and is, at the moment, convincing Little Girl that sleep away camp is really fun and urging her to attend the same week so they can be there together. Don't know what I'll do with both of them gone for a week!

Anyway, have you heard about THIS? The Girl Scout 100th Anniversary Take Action Project is called Forever Green. I cannot tell you how happy I am about this. The only way that people are going to start taking responsibility for our planet is to learn how important it is when they are young. This will also encourage these young girls to urge their parents into action. Good Job Girl Scouts. I'm happy to be a part of you! Read more on the GS website HERE. California Bag!

Hi Teresa,

I posted on Facebook that I received the Crypton bag. The bagger at the store really loved it, as did the checker. They were both young women. I was anxious to try the bag out, but what I bought was a nine pound ham, some frozen food, and a bottle of wine. The bagger asked "Do you want me to put the ham in this bag?" I told her "The bag is well-made and waterproof, let's test it out." We did, and I could barely lift the bag. As you can see, I had my husband carry it from the car into the house. It won't always be put to the test with that much weight, but I sure love it.

I love the whimsey of it all and if I weren't so darn practical (don't need any more bags!) I would snap one up in a heartbeat. I have my eye on that orange one up there. Seattle Bans Plastic Bags, and Sets a Charge for Paper

SEATTLE — The City Council here voted unanimously on Monday to ban plastic grocery bags and charge a 5-cent fee on paper bags — and this time city leaders hope the ban actually takes effect.

Three years ago, Seattle city officials became the first in the nation to approve a fee on paper and plastic bags, instituting a charge of 20 cents for each bag provided by many retail stores. The idea was to create a financial incentive to reduce pollution: the fee was supposed to prompt people to bring reusable bags with them to shop.

Just Label It…

Dear Green Bag Lady Readers,

I was shocked to find out that the United States is one of the only developed nations not to require the labeling of genetically engineered foods. Even China and Russia label them! Don't you think we have a right to know what's in our food?

It's estimated that 60%-70% of processed foods likely contain some genetically engineered material. And the majority of the livestock that Americans consume have been raised on genetically engineered grains (like corn and soy). But without labels, we'd never know.

And after almost 20 years, genetically engineered crops have yet to deliver on promises of increased yield, drought tolerance, better nutrient use efficiency, or reduced need for pesticides, while credible health concerns linger.

That's why I submitted a comment to the FDA demanding that genetically engineered foods be labeled. And with just a few clicks, you can join me! Will you tell the FDA that you support mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods too?

California Beach Bags!

Dear Teresa,

Late afternoon yesterday after everyone had headed home, we headed to Kehoe- it was a super low tide- not a bit of wind- a perfect sunset. And we quickly collected two bags full of plastic. Our new custom Green Bag Lady bags are GREAT! The mesh at the bottom works really well to separate the plastic from the sand. Just give the bag a shake-shake-shake (shake your booty) and out goes the sand. And the fluorescent orange fabric with the words One Plastic Beach not only identifies our project- it makes us and the bags visible even at dusk. It will be hard to get lost now that we can see the bright glow of the bag hiking along the edge of the surf.

Hope all is well with you- busier than ever? Whenever you get a chance Electric Works would sure like some more bags to give away.

I didn't post earlier because I was a tad bit busy making…

fruit pies and crostadas, big and small…

a free-range hormone/antibiotic-free turkey (even though I'm a vegetarian, I want to make sure my family gets the best, I'm told it was delish!)

my special vegan mushroom mushroom gravy (truly the best, even the carnivores love it!)…

pumpkin pie, this was the best I've ever had…

Big Girl and Little Girl made cute turkey mini pumpkin pies that turned out…

we also made turkey cookie pops as place holders (idea here) and Little Girl made the cutest name tags for all our guests (22!) this one says Peace, Love and Turkey…

this one says I'm stuffed and the turkey is lying down with his hands on his belly (my personal fav)…

and it wouldn't be T-day without a singing turkey, now would it?

Hi Teresa! I hope all is well and that it isn’t yet too chilly in your neck of the woods. I know the days of this lovely mild autumn are numbered so I’m trying to be outside as much as possible before winter officially settles in on the tundra.

I wanted to write you to finally share a pic of my Sewing 1 students from the SW Minneapolis Community Ed Program and their Green Bag Lady inspired bags (after I met you and learned about your project, I modified my lesson plans to use fabric shopping bags as an excuse for students to learn sewing fundamentals like overcasting and French seams). Hey Teresa Rose!

Well, our 2nd semester here at school started last week. When my students walked in and saw the bags, they went wild!! They're in LOVE with all that the Green Bag Lady represents! This week, we are preparing for a 7th, 8th, and 9th grade English class field trip to the Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens. There, we'll be practicing English with exciting activities. The students will be appreciating nature and our local environment while sporting our new Green Bag Lady totes! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! It was an awesome idea to send blank bags so that the kids could decorate them with their own style. Everybody included an environmental slogan on their bag so that others can "get the message". Thank you again for spending time with us via Skype and inspiring us all to be better caretakers of the Earth! You are awesome!!! Keep up the great work!

I hope you had a great Halloween. This is three of my colleagues and I being complete art geeks. We are CMYK, like the printer inks. Yep, being the true art/design nerds that we are.

I took my kids out for a little pre-trick-or-treating at a couple Bagette houses. This is Barbara (she is Maine meets Nashville)…

This year I had an indian girl, and Angry Birds pig and the cutest ninja I have ever seen…

We also stopped at Bagette Kathleen's house and got to see Mr. Bagette Kathleen too!
